MANUFACTURING SHIPMENTS, OCTOBER 2020

Month over month (seasonally adjusted, October 2020 vs September 2020)

Nova Scotia manufacturing shipments declined 4.1% to $774.6 million.  National manufacturing shipments increased 0.3% to $54.13 billion.  Manufacturing shipments increased in 7 of 10 provinces, led by Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick.  The largest decline was reported in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Nova Scotia manufacturing shipments decreased 4.0%. National shipments were down 5.2% with declines in every province except Manitoba and British Columbia.  The largest declines were reported in Newfoundland and Labrador and New Brunswick.

Year to date (seasonally adjusted, Jan-Oct 2020 vs Jan-Oct 2019)

Nova Scotia's manufacturing shipments decreased 6.6%. National shipments were down 12.7% through October with declines in every province. The largest declines were reported in Newfoundland and Labrador and the smallest declines in Prince Edward Island, Manitoba and British Columbia. 

Nova Scotia's durable goods shipments were down 1.6% while non-durable good shipments declined 8.9%.  

In unadjusted data for Halifax, durable goods shipments were up 6.1% while non-durables were down 0.6%.  Outside Halifax, unadjusted durable goods shipments were down 8.8% while non-durables were down 10.1%.

Trends

Prior to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, manufacturing shipments had been trending down both in Canada and in Nova Scotia.  Nova Scotia's manufacturing shipments declined 14.2% from February to May.  National shipments reached their trough earlier, falling 34.9% from February to April.  Since then, Nova Scotia's manufacturing shipments have recovered and were 7.5% higher in October than in February.  National shipments rebounded quickly through July, but growth has slowed since then and Canadian manufacturing shipments in October were 3.0% below February levels.
