LABOUR FORCE SURVEY - DECEMBER 2020 AND ANNUAL

MONTH OVER MONTH (Dec 2020 vs Nov 2020, seasonally adjusted)

In Nova Scotia,

  • Labour force increased 0.3% (1,600) to 502,300.
  • Employment decreased 2.0% (9,600)  to 458,900.
  • Unemployment increased 34.8% (11,200)  to 43,400.
  • Unemployment Rate increased 2.2 percentage points to 8.6%

In Canada, 

  • Labour force decreased 0.2% (42,000) to 20,308,800.
  • Employment decreased 0.3% (62,600) to 18,553,000.
  • Unemployment increased 1.2% (20,600)  to 1,755,800.
  • Unemployment Rate increased 0.1 percentage points to 8.6%.

In Halifax, (3-month moving average) 

  • Labour force increased 0.9% (2,400)  to 262,600.
  • Employment increased 0.2% (600) to 243,500.
  • Unemployment increased 10.4% (1,800) to 19,100.
  • Unemployment Rate increased 0.7 percentage points to 7.3%

 

YEAR OVER YEAR (Dec 2020 vs Dec 2019, seasonally adjusted)

In Nova Scotia,

  • Labour force decreased 0.6% (3,100)
  • Employment decreased 1.4% (6,700)
  • Unemployment increased 9.3% (3,700)
  • Unemployment Rate increased 0.7 percentage points.

In Canada,

  • Labour force increased 0.2% (41,100)
  • Employment decreased 3.0% (571,600)
  • Unemployment increased 53.6% (612,600)
  • Unemployment Rate increased 3.0 percentage points.

In Halifax, (3-month moving average)

  • Labour force increased 2.3% (6,000)
  • Employment increased 1.6% (3,800)
  • Unemployment increased 13.0% (2,200)
  • Unemployment Rate increased 0.7 percentage points.

 

ANNUAL AVERAGE (2020 vs 2019)

In Nova Scotia,

  • Labour force decreased 2.1% (10,300)
  • Employment decreased 4.6% (21,400)
  • Unemployment increased 30.4% (11,000)
  • Unemployment Rate increased 2.4 percentage points to 9.6%

In Canada,

  • Labour force decreased 1.2% (252,300)
  • Employment decreased 5.2% (996,200)
  • Unemployment increased 65.0% (744,000)
  • Unemployment Rate increased 3.8 percentage points to 9.5%

In Halifax,

  • Labour force increased 0.5% (500)
  • Employment decreased 2.8% (6,800)
  • Unemployment increased 49.7% (7,300)
  • Unemployment Rate increased 2.8 percentage points to 8.6%
