US CONSUMER PRICE INDEX, DECEMBER 2020 AND 2020 ANNUAL

The United States Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers increased 0.4% in December after rising 0.2% in November 2020. The food index rose 0.4%, with similar increases in the food at home index and the food away from home index. The energy index increased 4.0% in December with the gasoline index up 8.4%.

In December 2020, the index for all items less food and energy increased 0.1%. Shelter increased 0.1%, the fifth increase in a row for this index. The indexes for new vehicles and apparel were also up over the previous month. Indexes for used cars and trucks, medical care commodities, transportation services and medical care services were down in December.

Year-over-year (Dec 2020 vs. Dec 2019) consumer prices increased 1.4% (not seasonally adjusted). The index for all-items less food and energy increased 1.6%. The food index increased 3.9% while the energy index declined 7.0%. 

On an annual average basis, US inflation including all items was 1.2%. US Inflation for 2020 was faster compared with Jan-Nov averages for Canada and Nova Scotia.
