US HOUSING STARTS AND BUILDING PERMITS, DECEMBER AND ANNUAL 2020

 

MONTH OVER MONTH (Dec-20 vs Nov-20, seasonally adjusted annualized rates)

US residential building permits increased 4.5% over the previous month to 1,709,000.

  • Single unit structures are up 7.8%.
  • Structures with 2 to 4 units are down -11.5%.
  • Structures with 5 units or more are down -2.0%.

US housing starts increased 5.8% over the previous month to 1,669,000.

  • Starts for single unit structures increased 12.0%,
  • Starts for structures with 5 or more units decreased 15.2%.

 

 

YEAR OVER YEAR (Dec-20 vs Dec-19, seasonally adjusted annualized rates)

US residential building permits increased 17.3% over the same month last year

  • Permits for single unit structures increased 30.4%.
  • Permits for structures with 2 to 4 units increased 7.0%
  • Permits for structures with 5 units or more decreased 7.8%

US housing starts increased 5.2% over the same month last year

  • Starts for single unit structures increased 27.8%,
  • Starts for structures with 5 or more units decreased 40.0%.

 

ANNUAL (2020 vs 2019)

 US residential building permits increased 4.8% to 1,452,000

  • Permits for single unit structures increased 13.3%
  • Permits for structures with 2 to 4 units increased 7.3%
  • Permits for structures with 5 units or more decreased -10.8%

 Housing starts increased 7.0% to 1,380,300

  • Starts for single unit structures increased 11.7%
  • Starts for structures with 2 to 4 units deceased -4.2%
  • Starts for structures with 5 or more units decreased -3.2%
