NEW MOTOR VEHICLE SALES, DECEMBER 2020

Annual 2020 vs Annual 2019

In 2020, Nova Scotia new motor vehicle unit sales decreased 22.8%. The 39,496 new motor vehicles sold in 2020 represent a sales value of $1,573 million, down 20.3% over 2019.

In Canada new motor vehicles unit sales decreased 20.8%. The 1,552,887 new motor vehicles sold in 2020 represent a sales value of $69.7 billion, down 18.0% over 2019.

Unit sales were down in all provinces with the largest declines in Nova Scotia and Ontario and the smallest declines in Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island and Saskatchewan.

Year-over-year (Dec 2020 vs Dec 2019, unadjusted)

In Nova Scotia December 2020, unit sales increased 5.2% compared to December 2019. National unit sales decreased 4.1%. Year over year, five provinces had higher units sales and five had declines.

Sales value of new motor vehicles were 4.9% higher in December 2020 compared to December 2019 for Nova Scotia.

In Nova Scotia, average unit prices for all motor vehicles was $41,368 in December 2020, Trucks/SUV averaged $43,711 and Passenger cars averaged $30,390.

 

 

Average Prices (2020 vs 2019)

Nova Scotia's average unit prices for new motor vehicles increased by 3.2% for 2020, similar to the national increase of 3.6%. Prices rose in all provinces with the largest price increase in Manitoba (+5.7%) and smallest in Newfoundland and Labrador (+1.4%). Alberta continues to report the highest average unit price for new motor vehicle sales ($49,893) while Prince Edward Island reported the lowest average unit prices ($37,421). Nova Scotia's average unit price was $39,845 in 2020.

 

 

Passenger Cars and Trucks/SUVs (2020 vs 2019)

In 2020, Nova Scotia unit sales of truck/SUV (78.1% of unit sales) decreased 16.9%. Unit sales of passenger car decreased 38.4%. Sales value of truck/SUV (84.1% of sales value) decreased 16.1%. Sales value of passenger car decreased 37.1%.

 

 

 

Country of Manufacture (2020 vs 2019)

In 2020, Nova Scotia unit sales of North American manufactured new motor vehicles (73.2% of unit sales) decreased 23.0% . Unit sales of overseas manufactures decreased 22.0%

Nova Scotia sales value of North American manufactured new motor vehicles (76.3% of sales value) decreased 20.1%. Sales value of overseas manufactures decreased 21.0%
