CULTURE AND SPORT INDICATORS, 2019

Statistics Canada has updated indicators of Canada's culture and sport activities for 2019.  

Nova Scotia's GDP from culture in 2019 was $954.6 million (at current prices), or 2.0% of provincial GDP.  This is up 1.7% from revised results for 2018.  GDP from sport in Nova Scotia was $143.9 million; 0.31% of provincial GDP.  Sport GDP in Nova Scotia was up 2.9% from revised 2018 results.  

Nationally, culture accounted for 2.5% of GDP with the largest shares in Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia.  Culture as a share of GDP was lowest in Saskatchewan.  National sport GDP was 0.26% of the total, with the largest share in Manitoba and the lowest shares in Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador.

In the last three years, culture and sport GDP in Nova Scotia has been rising after remaining stable from 2013-2016.

Culture employment was 13,076 in 2019 or 2.8% of provincial employment.  Nova Scotia's culture employment was up 0.7% from revised results for 2018.  Sport employment in Nova Scotia was 2,518 or 0.53% of provincial employment.  Sport employment grew by 2.4% from 2018.

Nationally, culture employment was 3.5% of total employment across the economy.  British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec had higher culture as a share of GDP.  Culture as a share of employment was lower in Saskatchewan and New Brunswick.  Sport accounted for 0.51% of employment nationally, with higher shares in British Columbia, Manitoba and Ontario.  Sport share of employment was lower in New Brunswick and Quebec.
