MANUFACTURING SHIPMENTS, APRIL 2021

With April reference month results, year-over-year (Apr 2021 vs Apr 2020) and year-to-date (Jan-Apr21 vs Jan-Apr20) show rebounds in economic activity from the unprecedented declines observed in the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Month over month (seasonally adjusted, April vs. March 2021)

Nova Scotia's manufacturing shipments decreased 14.8% to $816.3 million. National shipments decreased 2.1% to $57.10 billion. Manufacturing shipments were up in 5 of 10 provinces, led by Alberta and New Brunswick. Nova Scotia and Ontario reported the largest declines.

Year over year (seasonally adjusted, April 2021 vs. April 2020)

Nova Scotia's manufacturing shipments increased 21.5%. National shipments increased 57.1%. Manufacturing shipments were up in all 10 provinces, led by Newfoundland and Labrador and New Brunswick. Prince Edward Island reported the smallest gain.

Year to date (seasonally adjusted, Jan-Apr 2021 vs. Jan-Apr 2020)

Nova Scotia's manufacturing shipments increased 15.5%. National shipments increased 57.1%. Manufacturing shipments were up in 8 of 10 provinces, led by New Brunswick and British Columbia. Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island reported the largest declines.

Nova Scotia's durable goods shipments increased 27.9%, while non-durable goods shipments increased 9.3%. In unadjusted data for Halifax, durable goods shipments increased 29.4%, while non-durables increased 11.4%. Outside Halifax, unadjusted durable goods shipments increased 26.0%, while non-durables increased 9.2%.

 

Trends

In the nine months leading up to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, manufacturing shipments had been trending down both in Canada and in Nova Scotia.  After the pandemic was declared, Nova Scotia's manufacturing shipments declined sharply, falling 14.2% from February to May.  National shipments reached their trough earlier, falling 34.9% from February to April.

Since then, Nova Scotia's manufacturing shipments have recovered and were 13.3% higher in April 2021 than in February 2020. National shipments have also been trending upwards since August 2020, and was 2.4% higher in April when compared to February 2020 levels.
