January 14, 2022US RETAIL SALES, DECEMBER & ANNUAL 2021 Month over month (December 2021 vs November 2021, seasonally adjusted)
The US Census Bureau announced today that the advance estimates of U.S retail and food service sales declined 1.9% to $626.8 billion in December 2021. Excluding food services and drinking places, retail trade sales declined 2.1% ($11.6 billion) to $554.3 billion. Food service and drinking place receipts was down 0.8% to $72.5 billion.
Year-over-year (December 2021 vs December 2020, seasonally adjusted)
Compared to December 2020, US retail trade and food services increased 16.9%. Retail trade increased 14.4% ($69.7 billion), while food services and drinking places sales increased 41.3% ($21.2 billion).
ANNUAL 2021
US retail trade and food services increased 19.4% year-over-year in 2021, following a 0.2% gain in the previous year.
In 2021, retail trade sales increased 18.1%, and food services and drinking places sales increased 31.4% when compared to last year.
Sector Analysis
In 2021, sales were up in all retail categories, the fastest gains reported in clothing stores (+47.3%). The slowest gains were in food & beverage stores (+4.4%).
