US RETAIL SALES, JANUARY 2022

Month over month (January 2022 vs December 2021, seasonally adjusted)

The US Census Bureau announced today that the advance estimates of U.S retail and food service sales increased 3.8% to $649.8 billion in January 2022. Excluding food services and drinking places, retail trade sales increased 4.4% ($24.1 billion) to $577.7 billion. Food service and drinking place receipts was down 0.9% to $72.0 billion.

Year-over-year (January 2022 vs January 2021, seasonally adjusted)

Compared to January 2021, US retail trade and food services increased 13.0%. Retail trade increased 11.4% ($59.2billion), while food services and drinking places sales increased 27.0% ($15.3 billion).

Sector Analysis

Year-over-year (January 2022 vs January 2021, seasonally adjusted)

Compared to January 2021, sales were up in all retail categories except electronics (-2.9%). The fastest gains reported in gas stations (+33.4%). The slowest gains were in sporting and recreation (+1.3%).
