In November 2022, Japan's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased slightly to 2.5%, down form 2.6% in October 2022. Compared with the previous month, Japan's labour force decreased 0.4% while employment declined by 0.3%.

The impacts of COVID-19 are still apparent in Japan's labour market, where unemployment rates remain slightly higher than in the 2 years prior to the pandemic.  Both employment and labour force remain below pre-pandemic levels. However, the magnitude of Japan's labour market shock from the initial COVID-19 shock was more moderate than observed in other advanced economies.

In contrast, Canada and Nova Scotia now have employment and labour force that exceed pre-pandemic levels despite the much larger declines observed in each variable during the first wave of the pandemic.
