Month over month (March 2023 vs, February 2023, seasonally adjusted)

The US Census Bureau announced today that the advance estimates of U.S retail and food service sales have decreased to $691.7 billion (-1.0%). Excluding food services and drinking places, retail trade sales decreased 1.2% while food service and drinking places edged up 0.1%.


Year-over-year (March 2023 vs March 2022, seasonally adjusted)

US retail trade increased 1.5% and food services and drinking places sales increased 13.0%.


Year-to-date (Jan-Mar 2023 vs Jan-Mar 2022, seasonally adjusted)

During the first three months of 2023, the United States retail trade and food services increased 5.4%. Retail trade increased 3.8% and food services and drinking places sales increased 17.5%.

Sales were up in 10 of 13 retail categories, the largest decline (in percentage terms) was seen in electronics while the fastest gain was reported in food services.
