The Japanese economy expanded at a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 1.6% in the first quarter of 2023. Japan's real GDP has been fluctuating between growth and contraction since the beginning of 2021. Japan's real GDP was 1.3% larger in Q1 2023 than it was at the pre-pandemic period (Q4 2019).

In Q1 2023, contributions to real GDP increase came from higher household consumption, non-residential investment and public investment as well as falling imports. Government spending saw little change while exports fell.

Japan's nominal GDP increased by 8.3% (seasonally adjusted annualized rate) in Q1 2023.
