LABOUR FORCE SURVEY, MAY 2023

                                                                             

MONTH OVER MONTH (May 2023 vs April 2023, seasonally adjusted)

In Nova Scotia,

  • Labour force decreased 8,800 (-1.7%) to 522,000
  • Employment decreased 5,200 (-1.0%) to 492,100
  • Unemployment decreased 3,600 (-10.7%) to 29,900
  • Unemployment Rate decreased 0.6 percentage points to 5.7%

In Canada, 

  • Labour force increased 17,500 (+0.1%) to 21,205,900
  • Employment decreased 17,300 (-0.1%) to 20,112,900
  • Unemployment increased 34,800 (+3.3%) to 1,093,000
  • Unemployment Rate increased 0.2 percentage points to 5.2%

In Halifax,  (3-month moving average) 

  • Labour force decreased 700 (-0.3%) to 276,100
  • Employment decreased 1,000 (-0.4%) to 262,800
  • Unemployment increased 400 (+3.1%) to 13,400
  • Unemployment Rate increased 0.2 percentage points to 4.9%

 

YEAR OVER YEAR (May 2023 vs May 2022)

In Nova Scotia,

  • Labour force increased 2,100 (+0.4%)
  • Employment increased 7,700 (+1.6%)
  • Unemployment decreased 5,600 (-15.8%)
  • Unemployment Rate decreased 1.1 percentage points

In Canada, 

  • Labour force increased 382,500 (+1.8%)
  • Employment increased 365,000 (+1.8%)
  • Unemployment increased 17,500 (+1.6%)
  • Unemployment Rate was unchanged

In Halifax,  (3-month moving average) 

  • Labour force increased 12,900 (+4.9%)
  • Employment increased 11,500 (+4.6%)
  • Unemployment increased 1,500 (+12.6%)
  • Unemployment Rate increased 0.4 percentage points
