MANUFACTURING SHIPMENTS, APRIL 2023

Month over month (seasonally adjusted, April 2023 vs March 2023)

Nova Scotia's manufacturing shipments decreased 4.6% to $825 million. National shipments increased 0.3% to $72.3 billion.

Manufacturing shipments were down in 7 of 10 provinces, Ontario and British Columbia had the largest reported growth. Newfoundland and Labrador reported the largest decline.                                                                 

Year over year (April 2023 vs April 2022)

Nova Scotia's manufacturing shipments decreased 11.2%. National shipments decreased 1.6%.

Manufacturing shipments were down in all provinces except Manitoba and Ontario. Newfoundland and Labrador reported the largest decline.

Year to date (seasonally adjusted, January-April 2023 vs January-April 2022)

Nova Scotia's manufacturing shipments decreased 4.0%. National shipments increased 3.7%.

Manufacturing shipments were up in 6 of 10 provinces. Prince Edward Island reported the largest increase. New Brunswick and British Columbia reported the steepest declines.

Nova Scotia's durable goods shipments decreased 2.6%, while non-durable goods shipments decreased 4.7%. In Halifax, durable goods shipments increased 3.0%, while non-durables increased 9.4%. Outside Halifax, durable goods shipments decreased 8.3%, while non-durables decreased 7.5%.

Trends 

After reporting a large increased in May of 2022, Nova Scotia's seasonally adjusted manufacturing shipments have fallen back below previous trends.  Periodic spikes in Nova Scotia's shipments values are not uncommon.  Throughout most of 2023, Nova Scotia's manufacturing shipments growth has fallen while national shipments have grown.
