EU AND EURO AREA TRADE BALANCE IN GOODS, APRIL 2023

In the 27 countries of the European Union, the balance of trade in goods shifted from a surplus of €12.2 billion in March 2023 to a deficit of €10.0 billion in April 2023. Exports from the European Union were down 4.2% to €209.7 billion while imports rose 6.3% to €219.6 billion. April had growth in imports after a consecutive seven months of decline.

In the 20 countries of the Euro Area, the balance of trade in goods shifted from a surplus of €14.0 billion in March to a deficite of €7.1 billion in April. Exports from the Euro Area contracted 3.2% to €234.5 billion while imports grew by 5.9% to €241.5 billion.

The European Union continues to run consistent surpluses in goods trade with the UK (€11.0 billion), Canada (€1.1 billion) and the US (€11.8 billion).

Likewise, for the subset of European Union countries that use the Euro, there is a goods trade surplus with the UK (€8.2 billion), Canada (€0.8 billion) and the US (€10.4 billion).
