GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS AND INFRASTRUCTURE INVESTMENT, 2022

Statistics Canada's Infrastructure Economic Accounts has released new tables quantifying the greenhouse gas emissions associated with investments in infrastructure.  These include both direct emissions as well as emissions associated with indirect impacts from supplier industries to construction.

In 2022, investments in infrastructure for all asset categories amounted to just over $2.5 billion in Nova Scotia.  There were 248,000 tonnes of emissions (direct and indirect) associated with this investment.  On average, infrastructure investment across all asset types generated 98.5 tonnes of emissions per $1 million of infrastructure investment in Nova Scotia in 2022.

Nationally, infrastructure investment generated 142.5 tonnes of emissions per $1 million of expenditures.  The highest emission intensity was in Saskatchewan while the lowest was in New Brunswick (followed by Nova Scotia).

Emissions intensity of infrastructure investment (tonnes/$1 million of investment) has been trending down in Nova Scotia.  Nationally there has been a declining trend as well, though this has not been consistent across all provinces.

By asset type, investment in commercial and institutional buildings has the highest emissions intensity in Nova Scotia, followed by transportation engineering infrastructure.

Transportation engineering infrastructure and institutional buildings were the two largest categories of investment in Nova Scotia in 2022.
