LABOUR FORCE SURVEY, AUGUST 2023

                                                                           

MONTH OVER MONTH (August 2023 vs July 2023, seasonally adjusted)

In Nova Scotia,

  • Labour force decreased 8,000 (-1.5%) to 528,800
  • Employment decreased 3,600 (-0.7%) to 491,600
  • Unemployment decreased 4,400 (-10.6%) to 37,200
  • Unemployment Rate decreased 0.7 percentage points to 7.0%

In Canada,

  • Labour force increased 54,200 (+0.3%) to 21,387,400
  • Employment increased 39,900 (+0.2%) to 20,206,300
  • Unemployment increased 14,200 (+1.2%) to 1,181,000
  • Unemployment Rate was unchanged at 5.5%

In Halifax,  (3-month moving average)

  • Labour force increased 1,400 (+0.5%) to 279,800
  • Employment increased 300 (+0.1%) to 259,900
  • Unemployment increased 1,000 (+5.3%) to 19,900
  • Unemployment Rate increased 0.3 percentage points to 7.1%

 

YEAR OVER YEAR (August 2023 vs August 2022)

In Nova Scotia,

  • Labour force increased 4,500 (+0.9%)
  • Employment increased 8,400 (+1.7%)
  • Unemployment decreased 3,900 (-9.5%)
  • Unemployment Rate decreased 0.8 percentage points

In Canada,

  • Labour force increased 577,300 (+2.8%)
  • Employment increased 500,000 (+2.5%)
  • Unemployment increased 77,200 (+7.0%)
  • Unemployment Rate increased 0.2 percentage points

In Halifax,  (3-month moving average)

  • Labour force increased 15,000 (+5.7%)
  • Employment increased 8,600 (+3.4%)
  • Unemployment increased 6,400 (+47.4%)
  • Unemployment Rate increased 2.0 percentage points
