October 12, 2023US CONSUMER PRICE INDEX, SEPTEMBER 2023 The United States Consumer Price Index (not seasonally adjusted) for All Urban Consumers increased 3.7% year-over-year in September 2023. Compared to September 2022, prices were higher in food (+3.7%), shelter (+7.2%), gasoline (+3.0%) and lower in energy (-0.5%). The CPI excluding food and energy rose 4.1%, continuing its trend of slowing.
The month-over-month (seasonally adjusted) change in the CPI was 0.4% in September 2023, declining from the 0.6% pace from previous month. Over the past month, the largest contributor was gasoline which accounted for over half the increase. The index for shelter rose for the 41st consecutive month and food index was up 0.6% compared to the previous month. The CPI excluding food and energy index was up 0.3% for the month, the same as the 0.3% last month.
