Month over month September 2023 vs August 2023, seasonally adjusted annual rate)

The United States construction spending increased 0.4% to $1,996.5 billion.  Total residential construction increased 0.6% to $882.3 billion. Total non-residential construction spending increased 0.3% to $1,114.2 billion.


Private sector construction increased 0.4% to $1,555.9 billion. Private residential construction increased 0.6% to $872.0 billion, while private non-residential construction spending increased 0.1% to $683.9 billion.

Public sector construction increased 0.4% to $440.6 billion. Public residential construction decreased 3.2% to $10.3 billion, while public non-residential construction spending increased 0.5% to $430.3 billion.

Year-to-date (Jan-Sep 2023 vs Jan-Sep 2022)

US construction spending was up 4.7%.

  • Total residential construction was down 8.5%
  • Total non-residential construction was up 18.4%
  • Private sector construction was up 2.4%
  • Public sector construction was up 13.5%.
