Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts increased 1.4% to $180.5 million. Canada's food services and drinking places receipts increased by 1.0% to $7.8 billion. All provinces reported monthly increases in receipts for food services and drinking places, except Prince Edward Island, led by New Brunswick.
Year-over-year (October 2023 vs October 2022)
Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts increased 4.8%. Canada's food services and drinking places receipts increased 6.8% with year-over-year gains in all provinces led by Alberta.
Year-to-date (January - October 2023 vs January – October 2022)
Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts were up 12.1% year-to-date. Canada's food services and drinking places receipts increased 13.8%. Prince Edward Island reported the largest gain. Saskatchewan reported the smallest increase, at 11.1%.
Nova Scotia's year-to-date gains in food service receipts are primarily attributable to the increases in limited service eating places as well as full-service restaurants. In percentage terms, however the gains were faster for special food services (mobile and catering).
Trends
Food services and drinking places reported repeated downturns during COVID restrictions. As these restrictions eased, food service receipts rebounded. Since 2019, Nova Scotia's food services receipts have generally grown faster than the national pace.
