June 28, 2010CANADA'S QUARTERLY DEMOGRAPHIC ESTIMATES 1ST QUARTER 2010 Nova Scotia's population was down 0.03% or 262 people, to 940,482 from January 1, 2010 to April 1, 2010.
Canada's population grew to 34,018,957 or 0.26% from January 1, 2010 to April 1, 2010.
Statistics Canada Quote:
"Nova Scotia posted a 0.03% drop to 940,500. The decline stemmed essentially from negative natural increase, as the province's total net migration was near zero."

Statistics Canada Population Estimates vs. Nova Scotia Population Estimates
The Nova Scotia Department of Finance has also generated population estimates on an annual basis (July 1 of each year) from August of last year. The Statistics Canada estimates for April 1, 2010 are above the Finance projections of July 1, 2010 of 937,150. The main contributing factor to the variance is a smaller interprovincial out-migration component in the Statistics Canada estimates compared with the Nova Scotia Finance estimates. For instance, NS Finance projects a net interprovincial migration of -2,500 for the one year period leading up to July 1, 2010. The sum of the previous four quarters (June 30 2009 - March 31 2010) from Statistics Canada indicates a net interprovincial migration level of -185, that is, only 185 Nova Scotians leaving the province.
With improving economic conditions in Nova Scotia (retaining Nova Scotia workers within the Province), this level of difference could be moderated by the time of the July 1, 2010 population estimates. Statistics Canada's estimates of population will be further revised for several years at each July 1 population estimate.
