January 02, 2015COMMUNITY PROFILE FOR JANUARY: EASTERN PASSAGE This holiday season, there were tons of live lobsters shipped away through Halifax Stanfield International Airport. The increasing demands have led to a major investment by a large Chinese seafood company to form a new lobster plant in Eastern Passage, which would bring investment and job opportunities to the community in the future (Chinese seafood giant takes over Eastern Passage lobster plant). The following Community Profile provides a glimpse at how the Eastern Passage - home to one of the province's significant lobster fisheriess - looked in 2011.
Nova Scotia’s lobster exports suffered during the Great Recession – falling at an average annual pace of 2.9 per cent per year from 2004 through 2010. Since then, lobster exports grew at an annual average pace of 9.9 per cent through 2013. Although increases in US lobster sales account for the bulk of the recovery since 2010, tepid growth in European markets has been overshadowed by dramatic increases in lobster exports to China and Hong Kong.
