LABOUR FORCE SURVEY - MAY 2021

MONTH OVER MONTH (May 2021 vs Apr 2021, seasonally adjusted)

In Nova Scotia,

  • Labour force decreased 3.0% (15,100) to 492,100
  • Employment decreased 4.8% (22,200) to 443,700
  • Unemployment increased 17.5% (7,200) to 48,400
  • Unemployment rate increased 1.7 percentage points to 9.8%.

In Canada, 

  • Labour force decreased 0.3% (55,900) to 20,211,600
  • Employment decreased 0.4% (68,000) to 18,559,200
  • Unemployment increased 0.7% (12,000) to 1,652,300
  • Unemployment rate increased 0.1 percentage points to 8.2%.

In Halifax,  (3-month moving average) 

  • Labour force decreased 1.4% (3,600) to 259,300
  • Employment decreased 2.3% (5,600) to 236,100
  • Unemployment increased 9.4% (2,000) to 23,200
  • Unemployment rate increased 0.8 percentage points to 8.9%

 

YEAR OVER YEAR (May 2021 vs May 2020, seasonally adjusted)

In Nova Scotia,

  • Labour force increased 6.3% (29,300)
  • Employment increased 10.8% (43,300)
  • Unemployment recreased 22.4% (14,000)
  • Unemployment rate decreased 3.7 percentage points

In Canada,

  • Labour force increased 6.1% (1,157,800)
  • Employment increased 12.9% (2,115,200)
  • Unemployment decreased 36.7% (957,500)
  • Unemployment rate decreased 5.5 percentage points

In Halifax, (3-month moving average)

  • Labour force increased 10.1% (23,700)
  • Employment increased 12.1% (25,500)
  • Unemployment decreased 7.2% (1,800)
  • Unemployment rate decreased 1.7 percentage points
