UK TRADE BALANCE, APRIL 2024

Month-over-month (April 2024 vs March 2024, seasonally adjusted)

The United Kingdom (UK) goods and services trade deficit widened by £5.7 billion to £6.8 billion. Exports of goods and services decreased 0.7% (£0.5 billion) to £70.1 billion while imports of goods and services were up 7.2% (£5.2 billion) to £76.9 billion.

The UK goods trade deficit widened by £5.6 billion to £19.6 billion. Exports of goods from the UK decreased 2.4% (£0.7 billion) to £29.9 billion. Imports of goods to the UK grew 11.0% (£4.9 billion) to £49.5 billion. The UK services trade surplus was little changed at £12.9 billion. Exports of services from the UK increased 0.6% (£0.2 billion) to £40.2 billion while imports of services to the UK increased 0.9% (£0.2 billion) to £27.3 billion. 

The UK goods trade deficit with the European Union (EU) widened by £2.2 billion to £12.3 billion. Exports of goods from the UK to the EU decreased by 0.9% (£0.1 billion) to £14.6 billion while imports of goods from the EU to the UK increased by 8.1% (£2.0 billion) to £26.9 billion.  The UK trade deficit with countries outside the EU also increased, widening by £3.5 billion to £7.3 billion.  Exports from the UK to countries outside the EU were down 3.7% (£0.6 billion) while imports to the UK from non-EU countries rose 14.7% (£2.9 billion) to £22.6 billion.

Year-over-year (April 2024 vs April 2023)

The UK goods and services trade deficit widened by £5.2 billion.  The goods deficit expanded by £4.9 billion while the services deficit expanded by £0.2 billion.  Goods exports were down 10.8% year-over-year (-£3.6 billion) while goods imports were up 2.7% (+£1.3 billion).  Services exports were up 2.9% (+£1.1 billion) while services imports were up 5.3% (+£1.4 billion).

Compared with April 2023, the UK goods trade deficit with the EU widened by £2.3 billion (exports -8.0% or -£1.3 billion, imports +3.9% or +£1.0 billion).  The UK goods trade deficit with non EU countries expanded by £2.6 billion (exports -13.4% or -£2.4 billion, imports +1.3% or +£0.3 billion).
