CANADA GDP BY INDUSTRY, APRIL 2024

Month-over-month (April 2024 vs March 2024)

Real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Canada was up 0.3% in April following no change in March 2024. 

Real GDP in Canada's goods producing industries was up 0.3% from March to April 2024.  

Real GDP in Canada's services-producing industries was also up 0.3% from March to April 2024.

Among broad industries, monthly GDP gains were strongest for wholesale trade, mining/oil/gas and accommodation/food services.  The largest declines were reported for management of companies, construction and administrative/business support services (including call centres).  

Year-to-date (January-April 2024 vs January-April 2023)

The Canadian economy was 0.8% larger in January-April 2024 when compared to the same period of 2023.

Real GDP from goods producing industries was down 1.5% with faster losses across all industries except mining/oil/gas (+2.9%).

Real GDP from services-producing industries was up 1.6% with gains in most industries.  The year-to-date real GDP declines were in company management (-32.3%, though this is a small industry), arts/recreation (-1.5%), information/culture (-0.5%), and administrative/support/call centres (-0.5%). The strongest increases were in transportation/warehousing (+3.5%) and health/social assistance (+2.6%).
