NOVA SCOTIA INTERNATIONAL GOODS EXPORTS, JANUARY 2025

Year-over-year (January 2025 vs January 2024, domestic exports on a customs-basis, unadjusted)

Nova Scotia international goods exports were $624.7 million in January 2025, an increase of 15.7% compared to January 2024. This was the highest level of January goods exports on record.

Canada's goods exports increased by 17.9% compared to January 2024. Every province except New Brunswick reported year-over year increases in goods exports in January 2025. Prince Edward Island reported the largest increase, followed by Ontario.

Among broad product categories, Nova Scotia's domestic exports grew the most for farm, fishing, intermediate food products, other transportation equipment, consumer goods, and motor vehicles/parts. Shipments of energy, metal, non-metallic mineral products, and special transactions were down in January 2025 compared to January 2024.

Note: there was a substantial revision to Nova Scotia exports of energy products in 2024.

The US is by far Nova Scotia's largest destination for international goods exports. In January 2025, Nova Scotia exports to the United States were up 17.7% over January 2024, rising to $428.5 million.

China is Nova Scotia's second largest export destination and exports increaed 6.9% to $89.8 million in January 2025 when compared to January 2024.

Among the other significant export destinations, year-over-year exports were up sharply to France, Germany, Turkey, Singapore, Belgium and Spain, and exports to Algeria resumed after eight months of zero exports. The largest declines in year-over-year exports were to the United Kingdom, Mexico, South Korea and Japan.

Nova Scotia's exports to the US accounted for 68.6% of exports in January 2025. Massachusetts alone had a similar export value to China in the first month of 2025. Exports were up for eight of Nova Scotia's top ten US state destinations; exports were down to Texas and Wisconsin. The largest dollar value increase was for Massachusetts and New York.
