December 04, 2025GDP BY CENSUS METROPOLITAN AREA, 2022 Statistics Canada has released Gross Domestic Product (GDP) data for Canada's Census Metropolitan Areas (CMAs) and the areas outside of CMAs for 2022. All data are benchmarked to provincial nominal GDP at basic prices. Note that CMA geographies reflect 2016 Census of Population boundaries.
The results for 2022 continue to show that just over half (50.2%) of Canada's GDP was generated in six CMAs: Toronto, Montréal, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Ottawa. In 2022, CMAs generated 73.1% of Canadian GDP.
In Nova Scotia, Halifax generated 59.5% of provincial GDP in 2022.
From 2021 to 2022, Nova Scotia's nominal GDP grew 9.3%. Halifax GDP grew by 12.4% while GDP outside the city grew by 5.1%. Across Canada, nominal GDP grew 13.0% in 2022, with all CMAs reporting growth as the pandemic recovery continued. Among CMAs, the strongest growth was in Saskatoon, Windsor, Sudbury and Regina.
Nova Scotia's nominal GDP in 2022 was $51.0 billion, of which $30.3 billion was generated in Halifax and $20.6 billion was generated outside of Halifax.
Nominal GDP in Halifax accelerated in 2022 and decelerated outside of Halifax CMA following the post-pandemic rebound in 2021.
