NEW HOUSING PRICE INDEX, MAY 2026

Monthly (May vs April 2026)

New housing prices in Nova Scotia were unchanged from April to May 2026. Nationally the price of new houses was down 0.3%, with only Manitoba reporting growth and the four Atlantic provinces reporting no change. There were declines in five provinces, with the fastest monthly decline reported in British Columbia.

Year-over-year (May 2026 vs May 2025) 

Nova Scotia’s new housing prices increased 1.0% from May 2025 to May 2026. Nationally, prices were down 2.4%, and have been declining year-over-year since March 2025. 

New housing prices increased year-over-year in five provinces, led by Québec, while Ontario reported the largest decline. Newfoundland and Labrador and new Brunswick reported no change.

Halifax new home prices increased 1.0% year-over-year in May 2026. Among Census Metropolitan Areas (CMAs), new housing prices were down year-over-year in fourteen CMAs, led by Oshawa and Kelowna. Montréal reported the largest year-over-year gain.

Year-to-date (January-May 2026 vs January-May 2025)

In the first five months of 2026, Nova Scotia new housing prices rose 2.2%. Nationally, new house prices declined 2.3%, with gains in six provinces led by Saskatchewan, offset by declines in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia. 

Halifax housing prices were up 2.2% in January-May 2026 compared to the same period a year ago. There were declines in prices in 13 CMAs throughout Canada. Regina reported the largest increase while Hamilton and Toronto posted the largest declines in new house prices.
