LABOUR FORCE SURVEY - APRIL 2018

In Nova Scotia April 2018, (seasonally-adjusted, month-over-month and year-over-year):

  • Labour force decreased 0.2% (-900) from March 2018 to 490,500 and decreased 0.1% (-700) over April 2017.
  • Employment increased 0.6% (2,700) from March 2018 to 457,700 and increased 1.8% (8,000) over April 2017.
  • Unemployment decreased 9.9% (-3,600) from March 2018 to 32,800 and decreased 20.8% (-8,600) over April 2017.
  • Unemployment rate decreased 0.7 percentage points from March 2018 to 6.7%.

 

In Canada April 2018, (seasonally-adjusted, month-over-month and year-over-year):           

  • Labour force increased 0.1% (11,800) from March 2018 to 19,758,700 and increased 0.9% (173,800) over April 2017.
  • Employment remains virtually unchanged 0.0% (-1,100) from March 2018 at 18,603,700 and increased 1.5% (278,300) over April 2017.
  • Unemployment increased 1.1% (12,900) from March 2018 to 1,155,000 and decreased 8.3% (-104,500) over April 2017.
  • Unemployment rate remains virtually unchanged from March 2018 at 5.8%.

 

In Halifax April 2018, (3 month moving average, seasonally-adjusted):           

  • Labour force increased 0.6% (1,600) from March 2018 to 249,000 and increased 3.4% (8,300) over April 2017.
  • Employment increased 1.1% (2,500) from March 2018 to 235,000 and increased 4.7% (10,600) over April 2017.
  • Unemployment decreased 6.0% (-900) from March 2018 to 14,000 and decreased 13.6% (-2,200) over April 2017.
  • Unemployment rate decreased 0.4 percentage points from March 2018 to 5.6%.

"In Nova Scotia, employment increased by 2,700 in April. The unemployment rate continued on a downward trend, falling by 0.7 percentage points to 6.7%, the lowest rate since comparable data became available in 1976. On a year-over-year basis, employment was up 8,000 (+1.8%), largely due to a strong upward trend in full-time employment that began in the autumn of 2017."
