Elmsdale Quarry Expansion

Description

On June, 29, 2007 Gallant Aggregates Ltd. registered the proposed quarry expansion project in Elmsdale, Hants County for environmental assessment, in accordance with Part IV of the Environment Act.

The purpose of the proposed Undertaking is to expand the boundaries of the existing quarry near the community of Elmsdale, Hants County, Nova Scotia. The expansion will allow continued aggregate production (blasting and crushing) and additional stockpiling, activities commencing upon obtaining applicable approvals and authorizations. The existing quarry has been operational for over 20 years and the proposed activities will take place over the next number of years (potentially as many as 50 years).

Minister's Decision

On July 24, 2007, the Minister of Environment and Labour released a decisionPDF Download Link (PDF:42k) concerning this review. The Minister has decided to approve the undertaking in accordance with Section 13(1)b of the Environmental Assessment Regulations, Pursuant to Part IV of the Environment Act.

The undertaking has been approved subject to a number of conditionsPDF Download Link (PDF:27k).

The proponent is required to obtain all other necessary approvals, permits or authorizations before commencing work on the undertaking.

Opportunities for Public Input

Public comments regarding this project were accepted from June 29, 2007 to July 12, 2007. Comments submitted on the Registration Document are available from the Nova Scotia Department of Environment and Climate Change Library.
