Tidal Demonstration Permit
A tidal demonstration permit is granted by the Minister of Energy, authorizing projects with the potential to produce electricity from tidal resources in Nova Scotia’s Bay of Fundy region.
The demonstration permit program supports the testing and demonstration of tidal stream devices and technologies in the Bay of Fundy.
Issued under the Marine Renewable-energy Act and its associated regulations, a demonstration permit authorizes the construction, installation and operation of one or more connected generators and associated infrastructure to demonstrate the potential or capacity to produce electricity from tidal energy resources.
The demonstration permit program ensures that activities are carried out safely, responsibly and in a manner that protects the marine environment, while supporting innovation in Nova Scotia’s marine renewable energy sector.
Program parameters
- geographic scope - located in the Fundy area of marine renewable energy priority (as described in Schedule B of the Act), excluding the Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy Marine Renewable-electricity area
- maximum program capacity - total capacity available for permitting in this application window is 7.70 megawatts (MW)
- maximum project size per demonstration permit - less than 2 megawatts (MW)
- permit term - a term of up to 5 years, with the possibility of renewal for one or more terms, to a maximum total duration of 18 years
- power purchase agreement - upon issuance of a demonstration permit, the permit holder will enter into a power purchase agreement with Nova Scotia Power Inc. using the prescribed form by the Minister
Evaluation criteria
Applications will be evaluated against the criteria described in the application guide (PDF). These criteria are developed with guidance from section 35(7) of the Marine Renewable-energy Act.
Deadline or important dates
Applications will be accepted from 7 August to 30 September 2026 at 11:59pm.
Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Applicants must complete the application form (PDF), and all required associated documents, and submit electronically through the NS Form.
Applicants are to pay the non-refundable application fee. Please refer to the application guide (PDF) for payment method. Payment is required for an application to be considered complete.
Applicants are responsible for ensuring that all required information and supporting documentation are complete and accurate at the time of submission.
