Optometry Programs

The Government of Nova Scotia offers a variety of eye care programs to help people access eye care services across the province.

These programs focus on the delivery of preventative routine eye care for children, up to the age of 10, and for seniors over the age of 65, as a means of early detection of vision problems.

All residents of the province of Nova Scotia who have a valid Nova Scotia health card are eligible for coverage.

Routine Vision Exam

A comprehensive eye examination of a routine nature is available once in a 2-year period for:

  • Children who have not yet reached their 10th birthday
  • Persons 65 years of age and older

Medically Required Eye Care Services

These services are for residents of all ages, where it has been deemed to be medically required as per the Optometrists’ Guide (PDF 400 kB)
