The Nova Scotia Department of Finance and Treasury Board oversees revenues that make up the majority of the province’s fiscal resources. Tax revenues produce more than 50 per cent of provincial revenues from around 700,000 personal and corporate taxpayers.
Department responsibilities include:
- Forecasting Nova Scotia tax revenues
- Conducting policy and financial analysis of current and potential tax measures
- Providing technical advice and counsel to the Minister, Executive Council and other departments and agencies
- Overseeing legislation, tax collection agreements and other administrative arrangements for the province’s major tax revenue sources
- Working with other provincial and federal counterparts in developing tax policy and administrative resources
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) administers the collection of personal and corporate income taxes as well as HST on behalf of the province.
The Nova Scotia Provincial Tax Commission, part of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations, administers the collection of motive fuel, tobacco taxes and certain HST rebates in Nova Scotia on behalf of the Minister of Finance and Treasury Board.
