Go Wild, in Winter!

Always carry a survival kit when travelling in remote areas. Pack it in a small, waterproof container so you're not tempted to leave it at home.

In a survival situation your priorities are to find or make shelter, keep warm and dry, and signal for help.

The kit should provide a means of achieving all three.

  • Emergency foil blankets (Heavy duty, nylon tarp backing, grommets)
  • Sheet of light plastic, 3m (10 feet) square, and some twine
  • Roll of electricians tape (cold resistant)
  • Strike anywhere matches
  • Candle Fire starter
  • Two aluminum foil bread pans, folded (to heat water)
  • Signalling mirror
  • Whistle
  • Chocolate bar,
  • bouillon and flavoured gelatin powder for hot drinks
  • First aid kit
  • Knife
  • Extra socks

Practice using these materials, and building shelters, before you head out.
