Giving greenhouse gases the cold shoulder
Clearwater is a leader in Nova Scotia’s seafood industry. The company estimates that 30% of its annual fuel budget, representing 9 million litres of diesel, is used for onboard refrigeration of the shellfish harvest.
Ontario’s Thermalfrost Inc. has developed a thermal compressor that uses waste heat generated from the boat’s diesel engine exhaust to generate deep refrigeration.
Clearwater has modified four of its offshore fishing platforms to employ this system, which will eliminate Clearwater’s use of fuel for refrigeration, and all the greenhouse gases associated with it.
