Data Description
Abstract: This digital product is a compilation of geological data which was collected as part of the St. Mary's Basin mapping project from 1993-1996. The data was used to create Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources (NSNR&R) Open File Maps ME 2000-110, 111, 112 and 113, compiled by J. B. Murphy and R. J. Rice, 2005. The digital product was created by the NSNR&R, Mineral Resources Branch (MRB) staff. Their original digital data was compiled in a Fieldlog database during the project and was later converted by MRB staff into ArcView format. The digital product contains layers for geological features such as: faults, bedrock geologic units, geological contacts, outcrops, structural data, samples, anticlines, synclines and stratigraphic sections
Purpose: The purpose of this data set is to create an ArcView version of the data collected as part of the St. Mary's Basin mapping project and to produce four new 1:50 000 maps of the basin. This digital product shows the bedrock geology of parts of 1:50 000 NTS map sheets 11E/06, 11E/07, 11E/08 and 11F/05.

Processing Step Information

Processing Step (1 of 8)
Description: The St. Mary's Basin mapping started in the 1993 field season and focused on the East, under the 1993-95 MDA. The area covered is in: Murphy, J.B., Stokes, T.R., Meagher, C., and Mosher, S.J., 1994. Geology of the eastern St. Mary's Basin, Nova Scotia. In Current Research, Part A, Geological Survey of Canada, Paper 94-1A, p. 95-102. Randy Rice came on board in the spring of 1994. The area covered focused on the central basin and is in: Murphy, J.B., Rice, R.J., Stokes, T.R., and Keppie, D.F., 1995. Geology of the central St. Mary's Basin. In Current Research, 1995-D, Geological Survey of Canada, p. 11-18. In 1995, the mapping focused on the western basin (west of the Stewiacke River). In 1996 we had support from NSERC Industrial Collaboration with Caledonia Inc. This was targetted towards paleoplacer studies. note: comments above from Brendan Murphy - May 6, 2005. Data from the project was collected digitally and input into the AutoCAD / Fieldlog system. A number of working copy maps were produced.

Description: In the summer of 2003, MRB made an arrangement with Brendan Murphy to product 4 1:50 000 maps covering the St. Mary's Basin in exchange for the data that he and Randy Rice collected from 1993-1996 as part of their mapping project in the basin. MRB also committed to releasing the data as a digital product. The data from this project was to be used as part of the TGI-2 mapping project that MRB was currently engaged in.

Over the next several months Jeff McKinnon, Dawson Brisco and Sharon Lee worked on digitizing and compiling the various data sources into a single ArcView data set consisting of a number of shapefiles. Quality control was overseen by Brian Fisher and Jeff Poole.

NR&R shall not be liable to the USER, his/her clients, servants, agents, contractors, assigns, or to any other person for any loss or damage of any kind including personal injury or death arising from the use of the DATA or accompanying written materials, or from errors, deficiencies or faults therein, whether such damage is caused by negligence or otherwise. If errors or omissions are found in the DATA, the USER will notify NR&R.

The terms and conditions of the license accompany the downloaded digital product.

Technical Prerequisite: In order to view this dataset, mapping software is required (eg. ArcView, MapInfo, AutoCad). If you do not have this software, ESRI provides a free map viewer called ArcExplorer, which you can download over the Internet. This viewer works with the E00 files and an ArcExplorer Import Utility (import71.exe) is needed to convert the E00 files into ArcInfo coverages, which can be then viewed in ArcExplorer. Problems have been reported trying to import ARC E00 files into ArcView on Windows 95 computers. Related tables do not import into ArcView. It is not a problem on UNIX, Windows 3.1 or Windows NT platforms. If you experience this problem you can use our DXF/DBF product which contains the tables in dBase format. dBase files can be imported into ArcView. This map is intended for use at the published scale of 1:50 000. In order to view our PDF files on your computer, you will require a PDF Viewer (e.g. Adobe(R) Acrobat(R) Reader). If you do not have this software, Adobe(R) provides this software, Adobe(R) provides this software for FREE download over the Internet. You will require Adobe(R) Acrobat(R) Reader version 4.0 or greater to view the PDF files. In order to use the hotlink feature within ArcView 3.x in you may need to load MRB's Hotlink Anything extension which may be located in the arcview/ext directory along with documentation. You may also need to set the variable MEBGIS_HOME on your system to the location of the data set on your system. The SHP product provides an ArcView project set up with the hotlinks working. Some modifications to the HOTLINK field in the database tables or in the HLFILES to make the hotlink work properly. Some knowledge of ArcView and hotlinks may be required to make this work properly.
