Data Description
Abstract: This digital product is a compilation of geological data which was collected as part of the Targeted Geoscience Initiative Project (Phase 1) from 2000-2003. The data was used to create Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources (NSNR&R) Open File Map 2010-6, Bedrock Geology Map of the Port Hawkesbury Area, Part of NTS Sheets 11F/06, 11F/07, 11F/10, 11F/11 and 11F/15, Inverness, Richmond, Guysborough and Antigonish Counties, Nova Scotia, compiled by P. S. Giles, R. D. Naylor, P. J. Ténière, C. E. White, S. M. Barr, G. DeMont and E. R. Force, 2010. The digital product was created by the NSNR&R, Mineral Resources Branch (MRB) staff. The original digital data was compiled primarily from field work done during the course of the project and then placed on a draft map created by Peter Giles at the GSC. The data contained on this map was used to create the digital product. The digital product contains layers for geological features such as: age dates, drillholes, mineral occurrences, outcrops, petroleum wells, quarries, shafts, spore sample locations, and structural data.
Purpose: The purpose of this data set is to create an ArcGIS version of the data collected as part of the TGI Project (Phase 1) and to produce 1 new 1:50 000 map. This digital product shows the bedrock geology on parts of 1:50 000 NTS map sheets 11F/06, 11F/07, 11F/10, 11F/11 and 11F/15. TGI-1 Project Description: The Carboniferous bedrock in south-central Cape Breton Island is a proven host for gypsum, anhydrite, limestone, salt, potash, barite, base metals and crushed stone aggregate. In addition, the overlying Mesozoic and Cenozoic sediments are a potential source of high unit value silica and kaolin. Significant, long term exploitation of these resources has been inhibited by a poor understanding of the region's stratigraphic and structural relationships and associated resource genesis. Through integration of the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) and the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources (NSNR&R) expertise, this project is providing geoscience knowledge through the production of regional, baseline bedrock and surficial geological data in order to stimulate resource exploration and exploitation.

Processing Step Information

Processing Step (1 of 9)
Description: Field work on the Port Hawkesbury mapping project was conducted primarily by Peter Giles of the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) from 2000-2003. There was input from the other authors and further work by Peter following this time.
  Software and Version: none
  Date: 2000-2003
  Contact Person: (see Contact Information)

Processing Step (2 of 9)
Description: Between 2000 and 2008 Peter entered the data into CARIS and began to produce a draft bedrock geology map. Unfortunately he was unable to publish this map through the GSC. In 2008 Rob Naylor (Manager Geological Mapping NSNR&R) made arrangements to acquired all the digital data from Peter and arranged with the GIS group that NR&R would create publication quality map and digital product that NR&R would release for public distribution.
  Software and Version: CARIS
  Date: 2000-2008
  Contact Person: (see Contact Information)

Processing Step (3 of 9)
Description: In August 2008 John MacNeil visited the GSC offices and was able to extract Peter's mapping data in a number of formats including the digital data as DXF files and tables, and the current map as a georeferanced image. John also did some initial data conversion to shapefiles.
  Software and Version: ArcMap 9.2
  Date: August 2008
  Contact Person: (see Contact Information)

Processing Step (4 of 9)
Description: Between August 2008 and July 2009 Brian Fisher worked on completing the data conversion, building the databases and building the bedrock geology polygons. Although much of the data was extracted from CARIS there were things such as the azimuths of the structural symbols and the link between the structural data and the associated outcrop that we were not able to extract. Amiee Ehler (summer student) helped with acquiring this data and making the connections data point by data point.
  Software and Version: ArcMap 9.3
  Date: August 2008 - July 2009

Our SHP products include an ArcMap project (.mxd) which has all of the shapefiles symbolized and tables loaded with links and joins already created. This project uses relative paths so it should be drive and path independent. It can be found in the c:\nsDNR\dp181v1sh\d181ha\arcmap\project directory.

ArcView Project Information

Our SHP products include an ArcView project (.apr) which has all of the shapefiles symbolized and tables loaded with links and joins already created. This project uses relative paths so it should be drive and path independent. It can be found in the c:\nsDNR\dp181v1sh\d181ha\arcview\project directory.

ArcExplorer Project Information

We have also included an ArcExplorer 2 project (.aep) and an ArcExplorer 9.x (.axl) project for this data set that can be found in the c:\nsDNR\dp181v1sh\d181ha\arcexpl directory. The shapefiles are already loaded and have limited symbolization, any related tables are not loaded. The AEP project uses relative paths and should be no problem using it without any changes. The AXL project includes a string c:\nsDNR\dp181v1sh that will allow the AXL project to open automatically if you download the shapefile digital product (SHP) using the default settings. If you download the product to a different location you will need to edit this string in the AXL file using a text editor such as notebook and change the path to where you downloaded the digital product.

Hotlinks

In order to use the hotlink feature within ArcView 3.x you may need to load MRB's Hotlink Anything extension which may be located in the arcview/ext directory along with documentation. You may also need to set the variable MEBGIS_HOME on your system to the location of the data set on your system. The SHP product provides an ArcView project set up with the hotlinks working. Some modifications to the HOTLINK field in the database tables or in the HLFILES may be required to make the hotlink work properly. Knowledge of ArcView and hotlinks may be required to make this work properly. A feature called hotlinks is used in ArcView to link a feature such as a mineral occurrence or cross section to a single text file, image or website etc. For features that we want to link multiple items or documents to we have developed our own hotlink extension for ArcView 3.x called "Hotlink Anything". The extension and documentation on how to install the extension, and set the required MEBGIS_HOME variable to the location of the data set on your system is included in the c:\nsgov\dig_prod_num\data_set_id\arcview\ext directory (example - c:\nsgov\dp305v1sh\g118a\arcview\ext) assuming that you used our default directories when downloading the data. The SHP product provides an ArcView project set up with the hotlinks working. Some modifications to the HOTLINK field in the database tables or in the HLFILES.TXT file may be required to make the hotlink work properly. Knowledge of ArcView and hotlinks may be required to make the native hotlink utility or our extension work properly.

Problems and Limitations

Problems have been reported trying to import ARC E00 files into ArcView on Windows 95 computers. Related tables do not import into ArcView. It is not a problem on UNIX, Windows 3.1 or Windows NT, or Windows 2000 platforms. If you experience this problem you can use our DXF/DBF product which contains the tables in dBase format. dBase files can be imported into ArcView.

Geological maps and associated digital products are intended for use at the published scale of the map.
