Data Description
Abstract: This digital product is a digital version of Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources (NSNR&R) Map ME 2000-3, Version 2, Bedrock Geology Map of the Wolfville-Windsor Area, NTS Sheet 21H/01 and Part of 21A/16, Hants and Kings Counties, Nova Scotia, compiled by R. G. Moore, S. A. Ferguson, R. C. Boehner and C. M. Kennedy, 2009. The digital product was created by the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources, Mineral Resources Branch (MRB) staff. The digital product was derived from AutoCAD files used to create Map ME 2000-3 version 1 and changes made to the map for version 2. The databases were developed from the information contained on version 2 of the map. The digital product contains layers for geological features such as: anticlines and synclines, drillholes, dykes, faults, bedrock units, contacts, karst topography mines, mineral occurrences, outcrops, quarries, structural data and cross sections.
Purpose: The purpose of this data set is to create a digital version of NSNR&R Map ME 2000-3 version 2. This digital product shows the bedrock geology of 1:50 000 NTS map sheets Sheet 21H/01 and Part of 21A/16.

Data Quality Information

Positional Accuracy
Positional Accuracy Report: There may be positional accuracy errors in the digital data that come from the original data collection, plus there are errors added by the process of digitizing the features from the original published map or field maps. The transfer of this data from older base maps onto the current base maps may also produce some error. The user should be aware that using this data overlaid on topographic data that was not used during the digital capture of the data may result in apparent errors in the locations of the data that may or may not be real. The user should always try and use background topographic data that is the same as the source topographic data noted in this metadata. The entire risk as to the quality and accuracy of the data is with the user and the user shall use his/her own judgment in making use of the data or drawing conclusions from it.

Processing Step Information

Processing Step (1 of 7)
Description: Around 1999-2000 Crystal Kennedy under the direction of Bob Boehner created version 1 of the map in AutoCAD. We do not know the source of where she digitized the data from.
  Software and Version: AutoCAD
  Contact Person: (see Contact Information)

Processing Step (2 of 7)
Description: Open File Map 2000-3 version 1 was released in 2000.
  Contact Person: (see Contact Information)

Processing Step (3 of 7)
Description: In 2004 Garth Prime requested that we digitize a number of bedrock and surficial maps so the we could eventually use them as part of a series of maps that he was going to produce from the Valley Aggregate Project. OFM 2000-3 was one of the maps that he requested. Since much of the map was already digital we took the AutoCAD files and imported the data into ArcView 3.x and created a series of shapefiles and associated databases. This work was begun by Paul Barker.
  Software and Version: ArcView 3.2a
  Date: 2004
  Contact Person: (see Contact Information)

Processing Step (4 of 7)
Description: Over the next couple of years Jeff McKinnon continued work on these shapefiles and database tables as part of the Valley Aggregate Project.
  Software and Version: ArcView 3.2a
  Date: 2005-2007
  Contact Person: (see Contact Information)

Processing Step (5 of 7)
Description: In September 2007 the library brought to our attention that fact that the copies of the Wolfville-Windsor map that they had for distribution were missing units labels in the legend and within the geological units. After reviewing the AutoCAD drawing files it was determined that there was no way to easily correct the problem with the original files to produce a new plot file. It was therefore decided that since all the layers were already in ESRI shapefile format that we would produce a new version of the map using ArcMap. The project was given a low priority and Angie Ehler began the cartographic work that would continue over the next 2 years. During this time a number of other errors were recognized on the map. This included things such as drillholes in the wrong location, missing anticlines, missing synclines and a geological boundary in the wrong location. During this time Jeff McKinnon helped with the editing and Bob Ryan supplied many of the corrections to be made to the map. Changes made to the map and database at this time were not intended as a new interpretation but rather an attempt to correct problems that should have been fixed in 2000. Therefore the hard copy map was determined to be a version 2 of OFM 2000-3 and not a new map.
  Software and Version: ArcMap 9.2
  Date: 2007-2008
  Contact Person: (see Contact Information)

Processing Step (6 of 7)
Description: In July 2009 Version 2 of OFM 2000-3 was completed and released.
  Software and Version: ArcMap 9.3
  Date: 2009
  Contact Person: (see Contact Information)

Processing Step (7 of 7)
Description: In 2009 Natural Resources released version 1 of digital product DP ME 389. It was created by running an AML called EXPORT.AML, using the digital product number 389 as an argument. This exported the data to a variety of formats.

Technical Prerequisite: In order to view our digital files on your computer, you require mapping software (e.g. ArcGIS, ArcInfo, ArcView, MapInfo, AutoCAD). If you do not have this software, ESRI provides two free Map Viewer called ArcExplorer2 and ArcExplorer4 which you can download over the Internet. ArcExplorer2 works with our "E00", "SHP", "JPG", "SID" and "TIF" files, while ArcExplorer4 worked with our SHP, TIF, JPG and web services. The "TIF" and "JPG" image file formats can be viewed in a number of graphics and image packages including CorelDraw and Paint Shop Pro. The MRSID "SID" images can be viewed in an increasing number of image packages as well as with a free MrSID viewer supplied by LizardTech. Links for these and other map viewers can be found at the bottom of https://novascotia.ca/natr/meb/download/gis-data-maps.asp.

Data Formats

MRB provides its digital data products in a number of formats. You can find our more information on these format and how to use them at https://novascotia.ca/natr/meb/download/dpformat.asp. Fonts A number of NR&R or GSC fonts may be required to properly view our data sets in an ArcMap project or to view the hard copy maps in a PDF format (normally the fonts will be embedded in the PDF). The fonts required for a particular data set may be found in the c:\nsDNR\dp999v9XX\d999YY\arcmap\fonts directory on your computer after you download the data set. A complete set of all of our fonts will be installed in the c:\nsDNR\fonts directory which is automatically installed and updated with our digital products. In order to see a complete list of fonts that are used and to download the NR&R and GSC fonts from our website please go to https://novascotia.ca/natr/meb/download/dpinfo.asp. Any of these fonts can be installed on your computer by using going to Start - Settings - Control Panel - Fonts - File - Install. ArcMap Project Information Our SHP products include an ArcMap project which have all of the shapefiles symbolized and tables loaded with link and joins already created. This project uses relative paths so it should be drive and path independent. It can be found in the c:\data_set_id\arcmap\project directory. ArcView Project Information Our SHP products include an ArcView project which have all of the shapefiles symbolized and tables loaded with link and joins already created. This project uses relative paths so it should be drive and path independent. It can be found in the c:\data_set_id\arcview\project directory. ArcExplorer Project Information We have also included an ArcExplorer 2 project (.aep) and an ArcExplorer 4 (.axl) project for this data set that can be found in the c:\data_set_id\arcexpl directory. The shapefiles are already loaded and have limited symbolization, any related tables are not loaded. The AEP project uses relative paths and should be no problem using it without any changes. The AXL project includes a string "#DPMEPATH#" which you will need to search for and replace with your drive letter and a colon (ex: c:) in order to make the project work. Please note the if you do not install the data set using the default path you may need to replace other parts of the reference to the path in the AXL. Hotlinks In order to use the hotlink feature within ArcView 3.x in you may need to load MRB's Hotlink Anything extension which may be located in the arcview/ext directory along with documentation. You may also need to set the variable MEBGIS_HOME on your system to the location of the data set on your system. The SHP product provides an ArcView project set up with the hotlinks working. Some modifications to the HOTLINK field in the database tables or in the HLFILES may be required to make the hotlink work properly. Knowledge of ArcView and hotlinks may be required to make this work properly. A feature called hotlinks is used in ArcView to link a feature such as a mineral occurrence or cross section to a single text file, image or website etc. For features that we want to link multiple items or documents to we have developed our own hotlink extension for ArcView 3.x called "Hotlink Anything". The extension and documentation on how to install the extension, and set the required MEBGIS_HOME variable to the location of the data set on your system is included in the x:\nsgov\dig_prod_num\data_set_id\arcview\ext directory (example - c:\nsgov\dp305v1sh\g118a\arcview\ext) assuming that you used our default directories when downloading the data. The SHP product provides an ArcView project set up with the hotlinks working. Some modifications to the HOTLINK field in the database tables or in the HLFILES.TXT file may be required to make the hotlink work properly. Knowledge of ArcView and hotlinks may be required to make the native hotlink utility or our extension work properly Problems and Limitations Problems have been reported trying to import ARC E00 files into ArcView on Windows 95 computers. Related tables do not import into ArcView. It is not a problem on UNIX, Windows 3.1 or Windows NT, or Windows 2000 platforms. If you experience this problem you can use our DXF/DBF product which contains the tables in dBase format. dBase files can be imported into ArcView. Geological maps and associated digital products are intended for use at the published scale of the map.
