Honouring Mi'kmaw Roots Summer Student, Casual

This opportunity is designated to candidates that identify as Mi'kmaq.

About Us

At the Department of Agriculture, our vision is to create a Nova Scotia agriculture and agri-food industry that is diversified, market-focused and profitable. We work to support the development of competitive, sustainable and profitable agriculture and agri-business industries that contribute to the economic, environmental and social prosperity of Nova Scotia.

About Our Opportunity

Are you a Mi'kmaw student, looking for a summer job and an opportunity to experience the food security and the modern agricultural science industry? If so, we have a multi-layered opportunity for you.

The Department of Agriculture has an entrance scholarship of at least $2,500 available to support your first year of study in an agricultural degree program at a Canadian university (the amount may be re-evaluated based on financial need). In addition to receiving the scholarship, you will also have a summer job with the Department of Agriculture after completing your first year. You will receive a salary for your work (~$10,000) and will gain valuable work experience and contacts in the agriculture industry, which will help you narrow down the kind of work you'd like to do in the future.

About You

You are Mi'kmaq and enrolled in your first year of a B.Sc. (Agriculture) program at a Canadian university, starting in September 2024. You are excited to learn more about agriculture and you are willing to bring your community perspective to the job! Create a short communication (for example, a 2-4-minute video or 1-2 page essay) to let us know:

  • why food security is important to your community
  • the most exciting thing happening in agriculture right now
  • why you want to pursue an agricultural career

Other Considerations

The scholarship will be awarded pending proof of enrollment for the 2024-25 school year. The summer internship is expected to run from 2 May 2025 to 29 August 2025. The internship work location is Truro, Bible Hill.
