NREC - School Programs

NREC Walking TrailWe have both On-Site and Off-Site Programs

On-site School Programs

The NREC offers year-round curriculum-based educational programs for students of all ages. We have two classrooms and are able to accommodate up to two classes daily (60 students maximum).  Our programs have both an indoor and outdoor component, utilizing our 120 acre woodlot with nearly 3 km of hiking trails for a hands-on educational experience.

To identify the appropriate program for your class, please select the grade level of interest below. Please note most programs have pre and post-visit materials to enhance the program. These are available in the program details:

Primary | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | Jr. High | Sr. High

Information and Guidelines:

Washrooms: These are available in the Education Centre, but not in the woodlot.

Clothing: Since most of the activity is outdoors, wear comfortable, warm and/or waterproof clothing to suit the weather and appropriate footwear.

Weather: Our programs run ‘rain or shine’.

Other Important Things to Bring:

  • Sunscreen
  • Hat
  • Insect repellent
  • Lunch and Drink (there are no vending machines or cafeteria services available)
  • Snacks

Please note that the NREC is a scent-free environment. Please apply sunscreen and/or insect repellent outdoors or before coming to the Centre.

Group Size: The ideal class size is 25 students (maximum 30) per class with a minimum of 1 leader per 10 students. Most programs are set up for 5 groups, so 5 leaders per class would be ideal.

Want to fill the bus? Consider bringing another class for a different NREC program. Please contact NREC staff for details.

Cancellations: You may cancel your visit due to bad weather, road conditions, etc. Please notify us ASAP to allow us to offer the date to other groups and to reschedule your visit. The NREC reserves the right to cancel on short notice if there is a concern for the safety of staff or students.

Expected Behaviour: To help ensure a great learning experience, we ask that teachers ensure students:
                        - stay with their group
                        - follow their leader's instructions at all times
                        - raise their hands to ask or answer questions
                        - do not climb trees, or remove anything from the woodlot
Any supervision or discipline matters are the responsibility of the Teacher.

Special Needs: If you have any students with special needs, severe allergies, etc. please contact us in advance so we can plan appropriately.

Cost: There is no fee for visiting the NREC. The only cost for your class is obtaining transportation to the Centre.

Off-site School Programs

If you and your class are unable to come to the Centre we can bring the program to you! Many of our curriculum-based educational programs can be delivered offsite and in your classroom. To determine if your program of interest is able to be delivered off-site, please contact the NREC staff.

To identify the appropriate program for your class, please select the grade level of interest below:

Primary | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | Jr. High | Sr. High

Cost: The fee associated with off-site programs depends on the amount of time booked. Programs lasting ½ day are $163.43 (+HST = 187.95) and a full day of programming is $217.96 (+HST = 250.65). Different classes are able to share the time slot (i.e. one class for the morning, another in the afternoon).

Resources: In some cases, your school may be close to a green area (i.e. park). Please contact NREC staff to see if this area may be able to be incorporated into your program.

Cancellations: You may cancel your visit due to bad weather, road conditions, etc. Please notify us ASAP to allow us to offer the date to other groups and to reschedule your visit. The NREC reserves the right to cancel on short notice if there is a concern for the safety of staff or students.
