An adjuster works on behalf of the insured or the insurer to settle an insurance loss or claim. Independent adjusters and adjusting agencies must be licensed. Licenses are valid for three years. In-house or staff adjusters are not required to be licensed.

In Nova Scotia adjuster licenses for individuals are issued in accordance with a Level Licensing System. Each level requires that certain Insurance Institute of Canada (IIC) courses, as specified in the Regulations, be successfully completed; as the level of license increases, the degree of responsibility of the license holder also increases.
To obtain an adjuster license at the levels available under the Insurance Act the applicant must follow the procedures listed below.
Step 1 - License Requirements
Before submitting an application for adjuster license, be sure you meet the following requirements:

- successful completion of IIC courses:

- C110 - Essentials of Loss Adjusting.
- establish eligibility to hold a Level I License.

- establish eligibility to hold a Level III License.
- have a minimum of two years practical experience as a Level II or III licensee, or both

Step 2: Application Forms and Process
Level I-IV - Individual Adjusters
- submit a completed Individual Insurance Licence Application from the Insurance Forms page. See Adjuster FAQ for more help.
- form must be signed by an officer or partner of a Level V Licensee, an adjusting firm, indicating that the licensee has agreed to sponsor this individual’s license application.
- include signed Adjuster Agreement (Level I, II, III)
- include proof of IIC course completion
- include the license fee (three year term)
- non-resident applicant: must provide an original Certificate of Authority from the licensing authority in the jurisdiction in which the applicant resides.
Level V - Partnership or Corporate Adjuster
- submit a completed Corporate Insurance Licence Application from the Insurance Forms page. See Corporate Adjuster FAQ for more help.
- ensure form signed by an officer or partner of the applicant
- include the license fee (three year term)
- non-resident adjusters: must provide an original Certificate of Authority from the licensing authority in the jurisdiction in which the adjusting firm is located

License Upgrades
Please provide proof of completion of courses required for upgraded level. License will be upgraded, at no additional charge. Expiry date remains unchanged. You are not required to re-submit the application form.
License Renewals
You will receive a renewal form in the mail, 45 days prior to the license expiry date. Please review, sign and return with payment.
Please use this form, and only this form to renew, when there are no changes to information you originally submitted.
If you are an individual adjuster, for example, and at renewal time, there has been a change in the your sponsoring employer, you must re-submit the Insurance Adjuster form available on our Forms page.
License Updates
Over the term of the license, there may be changes to the information you submitted. To update your contact or office information, advise us by email or regular mail.
