New gender identity options for driver’s licence and photo ID cards
The options for gender identity on driver’s licence and photo ID cards are:
- no indicator (if you request not to have your gender displayed)
If you choose to have no gender indicator on your card, we’ll still record your gender in our provincial records

Getting a replacement card
- Bring your current driver’s licence or photo ID card and any supporting documents to a Registry of Motor Vehicles or Access Nova Scotia office.
- Your new card will be mailed to you within 14 business days. When you get your new card, you should destroy your old card, just like you would with an old credit card.
If you’re 16 or older and changing your gender to an X or requesting no gender be displayed, you don’t need any supporting documents.
If you’re 15 or younger and changing your gender to an X, you’ll need written consent from your parent or guardian, or a proof of birth document or Certificate of Change that already has gender X. You don’t need parental permission or supporting documents to request no gender be displayed.
If you’re of any age and changing your gender to male or female, you’ll need your birth certificate, other proof of birth document or a Certificate of Change showing your correct gender.
There is no cost to replace a valid card if this is your first time updating the gender marker. If your card has expired, renewal fees will apply.
