Wildlife Habitat Canada

WINTER 1986

Habitat retention, enhancement, restoration and acquisition is the primary function of Wildlife Habitat Canada, a national, non-profit charitable foundation. The independent foundation was established in 1984, and has already implemented 37 projects benefiting wildlife.

In order to retain the diversity, distribution and abundance of wildlife throughout the country, wildlife Habitat Canada financially supports projects in every region. A prime source of monies used to protect habitat for a wide range of species comes from the sale of a mandatory migratory waterfowl conservation stamp approved by the Canadian government in 1985.

The overwhelming success of the stamp program, combined with the sale of matching prints, has generated almost $5 million. This money is being used for the acquisition or restoration of wetlands, ranging in size from small areas to over 5,000 acres.

Wildlife Habitat Canada has already provided over $4 million to support habitat conservation projects across Canada. New proposals are being considered all the time to insure a diverse wildlife legacy for the future.

These projects protect habitat, not only for waterfowl, but for endangered plants, upland game, shorebirds and birds of prey. WHC's programs are also of major importance to hunters and conservationists in the United States, since 8 percent of all waterfowl breed in Canada.
