What is the Workplace Education Initiative?

Workplace Education Programs are tailored specifically for each workplace to meet the needs of the employees in that workplace. Topics that could be included in your program are:

Document Skills - How to better use documents at work:

  • Graphs and illustrations
  • Operational manuals
  • Forms

Communication Skills - Learn ways to communicate more effectively:

  • Speaking and listening for understanding
  • Write so others understand and pay attention
  • Effective meetings and presentations
  • Supervision and team building
  • Problem solving and decision making
  • Conflict management
  • Customer service

Computer Skills - Make the most of the computer hardware and software in your workplace:

  • Designing and sharing better forms and documents
  • Word processing
  • Spreadsheets and accounting
  • Digital literacy and communication

Reading Skills - Learn simple and effective ways to:

  • Read faster
  • Understand
  • Remember

Math Skills - Build confidence and improve accuracy in:

  • Measuring
  • Estimating
  • Metric conversion
  • Money math

Essentials for Small Business - Programs might include:

  • Marketing
  • Money math
  • Business writing
  • Information management
  • Computer skills
  • Customer service

Academic Upgrading - Focus on reading, writing, math and problem solving. Participants might take this opportunity to work towards a specific goal. For example:

  • Workers who have not yet completed high school might want to focus on skills to help them pass the General Educational Development (GED) tests, recognized as the equivalent to a high school diploma.
  • Workers might want to refresh their basic skills and learn more advanced skills. For example, they may want to prepare for a certification program or studies at the college level.

Pilot Programs - Do you have new and emerging challenges in your workplace, contact us and we may be able to develop and pilot a new program at your site.

Key characteristics of the Workplace Education programs are:

  • Focus on developing essential skills needed for business success
  • Content tailored to the needs of participants in the workplace
  • All groups are represented in the planning and implementation of the program
  • Each program has clear, measurable goals
  • Small classes of 7 to 12 workers are generally held at the workplace during the workday
  • Participants provide feedback during and after the program
  • Individual progress and results are confidential
  • Programs can range between 34-120 hours, delivered in 2, 3 or 4-hour sessions, continuing over several weeks or months
  • Training is delivered by qualified and experienced instructors
