Environmental Assessment

All mineral development projects have some impact on the natural environment. By predicting and evaluating these impacts before work on a mineral development project even begins, there is an opportunity to mitigate against potential impacts. All mineral development projects, therefore, undergo a rigorous environmental assessment process administered by Nova Scotia Environment under the Environment Act.

For the public, this ensures that resources and ecosystem function are protected. And for the proponents of a mineral development project, an environmental assessment promotes better planning which contributes to the economics of the project. Environmental Assessment Regulations can be found on the Nova Scotia Environment website. Information about the Environmental Assessment process can also be found in the User's Guide to the 'One Window' Process.
