Abstract: |
A regional lake sediment and lake water sampling program was completed for eastern Cape Breton Island in 1983 by the Geological Survey of Canada and Nova Scotia Department of Mines and Energy Joint Project under the Canada - Nova Scotia Co-operative Mineral Program 1981-1984. A two-square mile grid was used to ensure that a representative sampling density was maintained. One lake in each grid square was sampled and approximately 314 lake sediment samples were collected from eastern Cape Breton Island. Lake sediment samples were analyzed for Cu, Pb, Zn, Ag, Fe, Mn, Co, Ni, As, Hg, U, Mo, Cd, V, F and L.O.I., while lake water samples were analyzed for F and U.
This data set was previously included as part of a compilation of geochemical surveys and released as DP 004 version 1. This data set previously consisted of
lks83ab1, lks83bb1 and lkw83b1 which were later renamed c133eccd-a, c133eccd-b, and c133eccw.

Survey Description:
The Lake Sediment Geochemical Survey was conducted in three separate studies; the original 1977-1978 Lake Geochemistry Survey (southern Nova Scotia), the 1983 Lake Sediment Survey (eastern Cape Breton) and the 1984 Lake Sediment Sample Re-analysis. As well, interpretations of the data-set have been published in a series of scientific papers and conference presentations. In 1983, a regional lake sediment sampling program was completed for eastern Cape Breton Island during the 1983 stream sediment project. The Lake Sediment Geochemical Survey formed part of the National Geochemical Reconnaissance Program of the Geological Survey of Canada. A two-square mile grid was used to ensure that a representative sampling density was maintained. One lake in each grid square was sampled and approximately 314 lake sediment samples were collected from eastern Cape Breton Island. The data are released as a series of 1:50000 scale maps for Cu, Pb, Zn, Ag, Fe, Mn, Co, Ni, As, Hg, U, Mo, Cd, V, F and L.O.I. Interpretation of the data set has been published in a series of scientific papers. A report on multi-element ratings maps for Meguma Zone lake sediments using data from the 1985 survey was released in 1989. |

In early 2006, the data set name was changed from LKS83AB1, LKS83BB1 and LKW83B1 to C133EC and the data was converted from the UTM zone 20 NAD27 projection and datum to UTM zone 20 NAD83 coordinates. No other changes were made to the data. These data sets were previously included as part of a compilation of geochemical surveys and released as DP 004 version 1. In January 2006 they were broken out into their own digital product. |

Technical Prerequisite: |
In order to view this dataset, mapping software is required (eg. ArcView, MapInfo, AutoCad). If you do not have this software, ESRI provides a free map viewer called ArcExplorer, which you can download over the Internet. This viewer works with the E00 files and an ArcExplorer Import Utility (import71.exe) is needed to convert the E00 files into ArcInfo coverages, which can be then viewed in ArcExplorer. Problems have been reported trying to import ARC E00 files into ArcView on Windows 95 computers. Related tables do not import into ArcView. It is not a problem on UNIX, Windows 3.1 or Windows NT platforms. If you experience this problem you can use our DXF/DBF product which contains the tables in dBase format. dBase files can be imported into ArcView. |
