Data Description
Abstract: A till and soil geochemical survey was conducted over the Meguma Terrane in Nova Scotia between 1986-1989 by the staff of Seabright Resources Inc. and Seabright Explorations Inc. Till and soil samples were collected at 4 455 sample sites in the Meguma Terrane. Till samples were analyzed for As, Sb, W, Au, Sc, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn, Se, Rb, Mo, Ag, Cd, Cs, Ba, La, Eu, Tb, Yb, Hf, Ta, Ir, Th, U, Cu and Pb, while soil samples were analyzed for As, Sb, W, Au and Ni. This survey data was compiled by the Nova Scotia Department of Nova Scotia as part of the Meguma Gold Potential Project of the Canada - Nova Scotia Cooperation Agreement on Mineral Development 1992-1995. This data was previously included as part of a compilation of geochemical surveys and released as DP 004 version 1. This data set previously consisted of sea_soil and sea_till, which were later renamed to c134snco and c134snct. Further information about the survey and analysis can be found in the draft documents: survey_description_co.wpd, survey_description_ct.wpd, elements_co.wb3, elements_ct.wb3, fields_co.wb3 and fields_ct.wb3 that are supplied with the data set.
Purpose: The rationalization, compilation, publication and investigation of the Seabright data is intended to enhance the geochemical data coverage in Nova Scotia in order to aid and stimulate precious metal exploration. The purpose for the creation of this data set was to create a digital dataset in GIS format consisting of the till and soil geochemistry over the Meguma Terrane, Nova Scotia.

Processing Step Information

Processing Step (1 of 6)
Description: Survey Description: The Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources (NSNR&R) has been collecting geochemical data in Nova Scotia using several sampling media at detailed and province wide scales. This data is released to the industry and public in order to stimulate mineral exploration and increase economic activity. The rationalization, compilation, publication and investigation of the Seabright data is intended to enhance the geochemical data coverage in Nova Scotia in order to aid and stimulate precious metal exploration. Information from this project includes till and soil geochemical data with limited till pebble lithology data. Portions of twenty 1:50 000 scale map sheets were covered by the regional till and soil geochemical surveys initiated by Seabright Resources Inc. The report documents the analytical results of B horizon soils and HMC's obtained from C horizon till samples collected at 4 455 sample sites in the Meguma Terrane. As part of the Meguma Gold Potential Project of the Canada-Nova Scotia Cooperation Agreement on Mineral Development 1992-1995, the purpose of this project is to compile a geoscience database of regional soil and till geochemical data taken for gold exploration during 1986-1988 by Seabright Resources Inc. (SRI) over the Meguma Terrane in Nova Scotia.

Processing Step (4 of 6)
Description: In March 2001, the Branch, as part of the CGKN Geochemistry On-line project, began a program of creating detailed metadata about the regional geochemistry databases. The initial draft of the information compiled at this time is contained in 2 WordPerfect documents and 4 Quattro Pro spreadsheets called: survey_description_co.wpd, survey_description_ct.wpd, elements_co.wb3, elements_ct.wb3, fields_co.wb3 and fields_ct.wb3.
  Software and Version: WordPerfect 9

Processing Step (5 of 6)
Description: In early 2006, the data set names were changed from SEA_SOIL and SEA_TILL to C134SN and the data was converted from the UTM zone 20 NAD27 projection and datum to UTM zone 20 NAD83 coordinates. No other changes were made to the data. These data sets were previously included as part of a compilation of geochemical surveys and released as DP 004 version 1. In January 2006 they were broken out into their own digital product.

Technical Prerequisite: In order to view this dataset, mapping software is required (eg. ArcView, MapInfo, AutoCad). If you do not have this software, ESRI provides a free map viewer called ArcExplorer, which you can download over the Internet. This viewer works with the E00 files and an ArcExplorer Import Utility (import71.exe) is needed to convert the E00 files into ArcInfo coverages, which can be then viewed in ArcExplorer. Problems have been reported trying to import ARC E00 files into ArcView on Windows 95 computers. Related tables do not import into ArcView. It is not a problem on UNIX, Windows 3.1 or Windows NT platforms. If you experience this problem you can use our DXF/DBF product which contains the tables in dBase format. dBase files can be imported into ArcView.
