Data Description
Abstract: This digital product consists of 144 shaded relief images derived from three contiguous LiDAR bare-earth Digital Elevation Models (DEM) of the Cobequid Highlands of Nova Scotia. The DEMs were gridded at 1m cell size from three areas of a survey carried out in December, 2011. Images were processed at 8 shading azimuths (0, 045, 090, 135, 180, 225, 270, 315) and 3 different altitudes (30°, 45°, 60°). The images were produced with two different vertical exaggerations (5 and 10). The digital product was created by the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources, Mineral Resources Branch (MRB) staff. The original DEM processing and creation was done by Leading Edge Geomatics from December 11, 2010 to March 21, 2011 and was supplied to MRB in a number of raster formats. The bare-earth DEM has buildings and vegetation removed. The XY Positional accuracy is 0.5 m along and across track and the overlap between lines was 50%. The point density was a minimum 1 point per square metre with a vertical accuracy of 15 cm (95% of the time for open cleared flat areas). The LiDAR capture was done in leaf-off conditions, with no snow or only a very thin snow cover. Funding for this product was provided by the Government of Canada, Natural Resources Canada under the Methodology Developments Project of the Targeted Geoscience Program 4 (TGI-4). The Cobequid Highland LiDAR survey is a collaborative project between the Geological Survey of Canada and the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources.
Purpose: To produce a series of shaded relief images from a 1m resolution LiDAR DEM in the Cobequid Highlands of Nova Scotia. This product has been and will be useful in a number of applications, including terrain analysis, watershed mapping, structural interpretation, surficial and bedrock mapping.

Data Quality Information

Positional Accuracy
Positional Accuracy Report: The 1m shaded relief images were derived from three contiguous 1m DEMs. The DEMs have a vertical accuracy of 0.153m at 95% confidence versus 160 survey ground control points. The horizontal coordinate system used was UTM20 NAD83CSRS and the vertical coordinate system was Canadian Geodetic Vertical Datum 1928 (CGVD28 via HT2.0). The bare-earth DEMs have buildings and vegetation removed. The XY Positional accuracy is 0.5 m along and across track and the overlap between lines was 50%. The point density was a minimum 1 point per square meter with a vertical accuracy of 15 cm (95% of the time for open cleared flat areas). The LiDAR capture was done in leaf-off conditions, with no snow or only a very thin snow cover. There may be positional accuracy errors in the digital data that come from the original data collection, plus there are errors added by the process of gridding the data. The entire risk as to the quality and accuracy of the data is with the user and the user shall use his/her own judgment in making use of the data or drawing conclusions from it.

This product was generated at a resolution of 20 meters and geographically covers the province of Nova Scotia. The Enhanced Digital Elevation Model was developed in the Grid environment of ArcInfo version 7.1 using the topogrid command. This interpolation method generated a hydrologically correct grid of elevation for Nova Scotia. Input coverages were selected from the 1:10 000 Digital Resource Mapping Series. The input coverages include: elevation points, irregularly spaced approximately 80 meters; elevation points, representing hydrologic features (streams); open water outlines with elevation values (lakes, coastline); breakline features (cliffs); contour lines - 5 meter where applicable; spot heights - where applicable

Processing Step Information

Processing Step (1 of 1)
Description: The shaded relief images were processed in ArcGIS Desptop 10 (SP3) Arcview license level using the Spatial Analyst extension and arcpy scripts written by Jeff Poole. The shaded relief images were generated using the Hillshade tool: arcpy.gp.HillShade_sa(DEM_in, HS_out, az, alt, "NO_SHADOWS", zf) where DEM_in = (COBEQUID_A_GROUND_1m_cgvd28.tif, COBEQUID_B_GROUND_1m_cgvd28.tif and COBEQUID_C_GROUND_1m_cgvd28.tif ) represent 32-bit floating point grids as input in respective runs with the following other parameters ... HS_out = temporary ArgGIS grid (integer, 0-255) az = (0, 045, 090, 135, 180, 225, 270, 315), alt = (30, 45, 60), and zf = (5, 10) JPGs were created using the following arcpy tool: arcpy.RasterToOtherFormat_conversion(HS_out, JPG_out, "JPEG") where HS_out is an output hillshades grid from above, and JPG_out the directory of the output JPG images. Files names are the same as the HS_out grids.

Technical Prerequisite: In order to view our digital files on your computer, you require mapping software (e.g. ArcGIS, ArcInfo, ArcView, MapInfo, AutoCAD). If you do not have this software, ESRI provides two free Map Viewer called ArcExplorer2 and ArcExplorer4 which you can download over the Internet. ArcExplorer2 works with our "E00", "SHP", "JPG", "SID" and "TIF" files, while ArcExplorer4 worked with our SHP, TIF, JPG and web services. The "TIF" and "JPG" image file formats can be viewed in a number of graphics and image packages including CorelDraw and Paint Shop Pro. The MRSID "SID" images can be viewed in an increasing number of image packages as well as with a free MrSID viewer supplied by LizardTech. Links for these and other map viewers can be found at the bottom of https://novascotia.ca/natr/meb/download/gis-data-maps.asp.
