Data Description
Abstract: This digital product is developed from a database of published drillhole information for the province of Nova Scotia. The database is maintained by the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources and Renewables (DNRR), Geoscience and Mines Branch (GMB). The digital product was created by the DNRR GMB staff. The database was developed from information contained in publically available mineral exploration assessment reports, open file reports and other GMB and Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) publications. The database provides approximate coordinate locations for many of the drillholes, and also provides a source reference on each drillhole. The digital product contains a layer for the drillholes (d003nsdh), a layer for references (d003nsdf) and a layer for drillholes with core (d003nsdx). There are 28,341 drillholes in the database and there are over 40,000 references associated with these holes. A single drillhole will have one or more references associated with it. This generally consists of a reference when the hole is drilled and subsequent references when further work is done on the hole (e.g. extensions, geophysics, sampling). There are 6,597 drillholes with core associated with them at the DNRR Core Library in Stellarton.
Purpose: The purpose of this data set is to create a digital product of the drillhole database that is maintained by DNRR. It covers all of Nova Scotia.

Data Quality Information

Positional Accuracy
Horizontal Accuracy Report: The locations of the drillholes have been obtained through a number of different methods over the years. They may come from assessment reports, drill logs, surveying, estimates from measuring the locations off maps of varying scales, digitizing, scanning the maps then georeferencing them, or other methods. This work has been done by a number of people over the years with differing degrees of control over the accuracy of the captured information. The database does not provide accurate measurements of the locations of the holes but rather provides an approximate estimate of the locations of the holes. The entire risk as to the quality and accuracy of the data is with the user and the user shall use his/her own judgment in making use of the data or drawing conclusions from it.

Processing Step Information

Processing Step (1 of 9)
Description: The drillhole data is maintained in an Advanced Revelation database that was maintained and updated by Don Weir from 1995 - 2001 in the GMB Stellarton office.
  Software and Version: Adavanced Revelations
  Date: 1996 - 2001
  Contact Person: (see Contact Information)

Processing Step (2 of 9)
Description: In 1997 the DNR released version 1 of the digital product as DP003. It was created by exporting a dBase DBF table from Advanced Revelation and processing the DBF file in an AML called DDH-PT2UTM.AML written by Brian Fisher.
  Software and Version: ArcInfo
  Date: 1997
  Contact Person: (see Contact Information)

Processing Step (3 of 9)
Description: In 1997 the DNR released version 2 of the digital product as DP003. It was created by exporting a dBase DBF table from Advanced Revelation and processing the DBF file in an AML called DDH-PT2UTM.AML written by Brian Fisher.
  Software and Version: ArcInfo
  Date: January 2000
  Contact Person: (see Contact Information)

Processing Step (4 of 9)
Description: In 2001 updates to the database were put on hold due to a lack of staff.
  Software and Version: none
  Date: summer 2001
  Contact Person: (see Contact Information)

Processing Step (5 of 9)
Description: In 2002 the DNR released version 3 of the digital product as DP ME 003. It was created by exporting a dBase DBF table from Advanced Revelation and processing the DBF file in an AML called DDH-PT2UTM.AML written by Brian Fisher. This version included all data entered into the database up until the time that work ceased on updating the database in 2001.
  Software and Version: ArcInfo 8.1
  Date: 2002
  Contact Person: (see Contact Information)

Processing Step (6 of 9)
Description: In December 2005 GMB updated the drillholes database to NAD83. This version is exactly the same as version 3 except that the product was moved from UTM 20 NAD27 into UTM zone 20 NAD83 coordinates. This version included all data entered into the database up until the time that work ceased on updating the database in 2001. No modification were made to the tables except for the addition of a number of standard coordinate fields that we added to the database table. The data set ID was changed from DDH to D003NS. A shapefile version of the database was created and the drillhole database shapefile was named D003NSDH.SHP. This work was done by Brian Fisher on December 21, 2005
Software and Version: ArcInfo 8.3 and ArcView 3.2a
  Date: December 21, 2005
  Contact Person: (see Contact Information)

Processing Step (7 of 9)
Description: In August 2006, DNR released version 4 of the digital product as DP ME 003 version 4. It was created from the NAD83 version of the database created in December 2005.
  Software and Version: ArcView 3.2a
  Date: August 2006
  Contact Person: (see Contact Information)

Processing Step (8 of 9)
Description: In March 2016, DNR released version 5 of the digital product as DP ME 003 version 5. Between the release of version 4 in 2006 and the current version 5 in 2016 there have been a great many changes that have taken place to the drillhole and drill core databases. The databases are integrated into one and have been moved from Advanced Revelations to Microsoft SQL Server 2008. There is a web based interface for data entry by custodians and a web based application for searching drillholes and drill core (http://novascotia.ca/natr/meb/geoscience-online/about-database-dcdh.asp). This digital product represents a dump from the SQL Server database in November 8, 2015. In previous versions of the database there was one drillholes point feature class released. In this version the digital product contains a layer for the drillholes (d003nsdh), a layer for references (d003nsdf) and a layer for drillholes with core (d003nsdx). There are 27,300 drillholes in the database and there are over 35,000 references associated with these holes. A single drillhole will have one or more references assocaited with it. This generally consists of a reference when the hole is drilled and subsequent references when further work is done on the hole (e.g. extensions, geophysiscs, sampling). There are 6,686 drillholes with core associated with them at the DNR Core Libray in Stellarton.

Processing Step (9 of 9)
Description: In September 2023, DNRR released version 6 of the digital product as DP ME 003 version 6. Between the release of version 5 in 2016 and the current version 6 in 2023 there have been a great many changes that have taken place to the drillhole and drill core databases. In this version the digital product contains a layer for the drillholes (d003nsdh), a layer for references (d003nsdf) and a layer for drillholes with core (d003nsdx). There are currently 28,341 drillholes in the database and there are over 40,000 references associated with these holes. A single drillhole will have one or more references associated with it. This generally consists of a reference when the hole is drilled and subsequent references when further work is done on the hole (e.g. extensions, geophysics, sampling).
