Data Description
Abstract: This data set consists of 24 color TIFF images with a resolution of 200 m X 200 m covering 12 1:250 000 NTS mapsheets, where airborne gamma ray surveys exist over Nova Scotia. Twelve of the TIFF images represent the radioelements for the entire province, while the other twelve represent the ratios of the radioelements values. The original data were collected by aeromagnetic surveys flown by the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC). rd_250_xxx.tif Series: Band 1: %K - Potassium Band 2: eU - equivalent Uranium Band 3: eTh - equivalent Thorium rr_250_xxxx.tif Series: Band 1: eU/%K - equivalent Uranium/Potassium Band 2: eTh/%K - equivalent Thorium/Potassium Band 3: eU/eTh - equivalent Uranium/equivalent Thorium These are the .tiff images showing ratios of radiometrics values for the entire province.
Purpose: The TIFFs are to be used as a backdrop behind other geological layers to assist with geological intepretations.

Data Quality Information

Positional Accuracy
Positional Accuracy Report: There may be positional accuracy errors in the data that came from the original data collection. The survey data was acquired from the Geophysical Data Centre NRCan/GSC/Geophysics Division in 16 bit signed integer raster grid format and have been linearly compressed from 16 bit to 8 bit file formats. The grid cells were resampled to a resolution of 250 metres by 250 metres and then contrast enhanced using a non-linear enhancement technique to facilitate visual appearance and interpretation. Consequently, the original digital values have been significantly altered. Quantitative analysis using this data is possible, however, if actual values are required the original data should be used. "non-linear enhancement technique to facilitate visual appearance and interpretation" means to permanently alter data values within a grid so that a narrow range of grid cell values represent the data over a wider range of values. In this case 'non-linear' refers to the mathematical model used in controlling the input and output data values ranges. Once this operation is performed on a grid it is irreversible and returning to the original data values is impossible unless the exact input parameters and mathematical modelling equation are known. "significantly altered" means that the data values within the grid cells have been appreciably changed from the original values and the process is irreversible. In this method, returning to the original data values is impossible. Scaling data from 16 bit data range to 8 bit data range is a method of compression. For example, take an input sample of grid values of 457-496, these may be scaled to the value of 128 in the output grid (depending on the modelled in scaling). Returning to the original values is impossible because there is no method of retaining which of the (128 value) cells had an original value of 461 or 483. "qualitative analysis" is possible with these image files. Image files represent a two dimensional array of data values. Images may be classified or grouped according to a set of training areas which define distinct class parameters. However, if these techniques are performed on imagery or grids which contain altered or enhanced data values, then the clusters or classes will be correspondingly altered relative to the same procedure applied to the original, non-altered data. The entire risk as to the quality and accuracy of the data is with the user and the user shall use his/her own judgment in making use of the data or drawing conclusions from it.

Processing Step Information

Processing Step (1 of 6)
Description: Since 1976, the Geological Survey of Canada has been systematically collecting high sensitivity airborne gamma ray survey data for the Province of Nova Scotia. Between 1976 and 1990, complete coverage of the province was acquired as either reconnaissance (5000 m flight line spacing) or as detailed surveys (1000 m flight line spacing). Currently, all of the province has been covered at a flight line spacing of 1000 m (see table 1- D:\Nsgov\Nsgov\gamma2.HTM). The survey data was acquired along north-south or east-west flight lines using a 50 l sodium iodide detector system at an altitude of approximately 120 metres at a ground speed of 190 km/hr. Table 1 provides information about GSC Airborne Gamma Ray Surveys available for the province at 1000 m and 250 m flight line spacings. Survey data acquired at a flight line of 5 km have been averaged and interpolated to a 500 by 500 metre grid cell raster. Alternately, data acquired using a flight line spacing of 1 km have been averaged and interpolated to a 250 by 250 metre grid cell raster. The GSC releases Air Absorbed Dose Rate, Ternary Radioelement Map, equivalent Uranium (eU), equivalent Thorium (eTh), Potassium (K), as well as the ratios eU/K, eTh/K, eU/eTh. The sodium iodide detector provides a measurement of the three most abundant naturally occurring radioactive elements, potassium, uranium and thorium. Potassium is measured directly from the 1.46 MeV gamma ray photons emitted by 40K, whereas uranium and thorium are measured indirectly from gamma ray photons emitted by daughter products in their decay chains. Uranium is monitored by means of gamma ray photons at approximately 1.46 MeV from 214Bi, and thorium, from 2.6c MeV photons emitted by 208Tl. Corrections have been applied to account for dead time, ambient temperature changes, background radiation, spectral scattering and deviations of terrain clearance from the planned survey altitude. A regional Airborne Gamma Ray Data Set covering the entire province has been created by the GSC. This data set was generated by merging the individual surveys and processing the data to remove levelling errors during the surveys and matched along survey boundaries. The data have been georeferenced by GSC in a NAD27 datum and projected into a UTM zone 20 grid.

Processing Step (2 of 6)
Description: As part of the NSNR&R RFP 1994-001148 Synmap Information Technologies acquired the data from the Geophysical Data Centre NRCan/GSC/Geophysics Division in 16 bit signed integer raster grid format and have been linearly compressed from 16 bit to 8 bit file formats. The grid cells were resampled to a resolution of 250 metres by 250 metres and then contrast enhanced using a non-linear enhancement technique to facilitate visual appearance and interpretation. Consequently, the original digital values have been significantly altered. Quantitative analysis using these data is possible, however, if actual values are required the original data should be used. The data products provided to the NSNR&R-MRB have been converted from the original format to a TIFF raster file format.

Description: In January 2006 the .TIF images were converted from UTM zone 20 NAD27 coordinates to UTM zone 20 NAD83 coordinates. This was done by Angie Ehler running the AML file - Tif27to83.aml. The images were renamed at the same time. The RADxxx.TIF image series were renamed to RD_250_xxx.TIF and the RADRxxx.TIF series was renamed to RR_250_xxx.TIF, where xxx stands for the 1:250 000 NTS sheet name.

Technical Prerequisite: In order to view our digital files on your computer, you require mapping software (e. g. ArcView(R), MapInfo(R), AutoCAD(R)). If you do not have this software, ESRI* provides a FREE Map Viewer called ArcExplorer(R) which you can download over the Internet. ArcExplorer(R) works with our "E00" and "TIFF" files. You need to download both ArcExplorer(R) and the ArcExplorer(R) Import Utility (Import71.exe). The import utility is required to convert the ArcInfo "E00" files into ArcInfo coverages, which then can be viewed in ArcExplorer(R).
